The AGROLAB GROUP and its laboratory AGROLAB LUFA GmbH in Kiel use a highly sensitive procedure based on real-time PCR technology that can reliably, accurately and inexpensively measure GMO contamination in feed. AGROLAB LUFA is a traditional feed institute with years of experience in GMO analysis.
GMO analysis
GMO analysis
Reliable GMO analysis depends on many different factors (for example the type of sample, the customer's production methods, etc.). A number of different strategies can therefore be used to reach reliable and useful findings. We would be happy to explain these strategies in a personal conversation using a detailed flow chart.
The fundamental procedure for GMO analysis is as follows:
Screening: provides the first indications of genetically modified material in feed
Identification of "GMO events" that allow the exact definition of the GMO in question (types not authorised in the EU such as rice Bt63 and flax CDC Triffid only need to be identified, as zero tolerance applies).
Quantification of the events (quantification can be required for types with EU authorisation in order to meet declaration obligations).

Legal requirements
Labelling requirement
In the European Union (EU), feed consisting of, containing or produced from GMO authorised in the EU must be labelled (Regulation (EC) no. 1829/2003 and 1830/2003). This labelling requirement also applies to products in which genetic modification can no longer be directly detected (for example vegetable oils).
Feed containing less than 0.9 % GMO does not have to be labelled provided this proportion is adventitious or technically unavoidable (proof required) and the GMO in question originates from GMO plants authorised in the EU.
For GMO for which EU authorisation procedures are pending or whose authorisation has expired, a tolerance of less than 0.1 % applies to feed in some cases pursuant to EU Regulation no. 619/2011.
For GMO not authorised in the EU and products made from it, zero tolerance applies as their placing on the market, use and processing in the EU is prohibited.
Voluntary "Ohne Gentechnik" ("GMO free") labelling in Germany
In addition to EU legislation, the EG-Gentechnik-Durchführungsgesetz (Act implementing EU genetic engineering legislation, EGGenTDurchfG) in Germany permits a voluntary "Ohne Gentechnik" (“GMO free") labelling for foodstuffs with a GMO content of no more than 0.1 %. These include foodstuffs and food ingredients of animal origin (such as meat, milk and eggs).
"Ohne Gentechnik"labelling for foodstuffs and food ingredients of animal origin is, however, only permitted if the animals in question did not receive feed subject to labelling requirements (GMO content of more than 0.9 %) for a specified period before the foodstuff was obtained.
Detailed information on the legal requirements is available here:
The guidelines for checking GMO in feed (Leitfaden zur Kontrolle von GVO in Futtermitteln) contain further useful information on the labelling of feed materials and compound feed containing or produced from GMO, and include a number of examples:
Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik (VLOG) – "VLOG geprüft" ("VLOG-tested”) seal
VLOG - Industry Association Food without Genetic Engineering
Background
Since May 2008, the EG-Gentechnik-Durchführungsgesetz (German act implementing EU genetic engineering legislation, EGGenTDurchfG) has allowed voluntary "Ohne Gentechnik" ("GMO free") labelling for foodstuffs with a GMO content of no more than 0.1 %. If contamination levels of authorised GMO are below 0.1 %, they are basically considered adventitious or technically unavoidable. #
The standard "Ohne Gentechnik" (“GMO free") seal was developed under the leadership of the German government to improve recognition of food produced without genetic engineering.
Only the "Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik" (VLOG - Industry Association Food without Genetic Engineering) is authorised to label food with the Germany-wide standard "Ohne Gentechnik" seal.
In line with the provisions of the EG-Gentechnik-Durchführungsgesetz, animals which are the source of foodstuffs (such as meat, milk and eggs) must not have received any feed subject to labelling requirements (with a GMO content of more than 0.9 %) for a specified period before the foodstuff is obtained.
VLOG therefore issues the "VLOG geprüft" ("VLOG-tested") seal specifically for feed that is suitable and necessary for producing animal foodstuffs in accordance with the VLOG standard.
Where a standard contract of use with VLOG is in place, users of the QS scheme from the feed industry can have requirements for the "VLOG-geprüft" seal checked in QS audit. This avoids wasting time and resources on two audit processes. Information on the procedure is available in the VLOG-Zusatzmodul „Ohne Gentechnik“ / „VLOG geprüft" (VLOG add on module „GMO-free“ / „VLOG tested – documents not available in English).
Analysis
Feed can only bear the "VLOG geprüft" seal if the GMO analyses have been conducted in accordance with the "Ohne Gentechnik" production and testing standard published by VLOG.
The AGROLAB GROUP and its laboratory AGROLAB LUFA GmbH in Kiel meet all the requirements of the VLOG standard and are therefore the ideal partner for GMO analyses in feed for VLOG certification. AGROLAB LUFA is also listed with VLOG as a GMO laboratory and is therefore closely involved in all developments in this field.
However, the fundamental requirement for GMO analysis to be accepted by VLOG is commissioning the correct analyses.
Our order form for GMO analysis according to VLOG is tailored to VLOG requirements and allows you to place your order simply and easily. The VLOG packages in the order form correspond to the minimum VLOG requirements for certification.
Our experts from customer support in the laboratory are there to assist with any questions.
VLOG-recognition
The AGROLAB GROUP and its laboratory AGROLAB LUFA GmbH in Kiel is a VLOG-recognized laboratory and meets the necessary fundamental requirements for GMO analysis in accordance with the VLOG standard.
